Buffing a spot down at Burnside skatepark with Belle in preparation for a piece i planned on doing in conjunction with the annual Halloween Skate Jam. I was supposed to paint the week before the event but some political issues developed,( super long & lame story) so now i"m finally getting a chance to get started. All i need now is for the rain to stop!

The breeze brings me out on those rain rinsed evenings of cool flow. From where i stand i smell the north end of town drifting south on the wind.. locust blossom, rose, and a peculiar cotton candy smell. The distant deep and haunting bellow of a freight train echoes into the night. The wind this time of year evokes a mood in me that has long sense gone to seed. Gone but not forgotten are those nights where my spirit rode the winds that swept desert lands of bitter brush and sage where the pungent funk of rabbit brush still lingers on in a sense although the colors have now faded like people i once knew. No need to shed any tear or long for what has passed for i was there in the full when the season was in.. that is enough. Artifacts of all those years are inscribed in the foot steps of the man who i have become. I pray to no god other than she who birthed the night sky and the dirt i ingest.

Derek Yost

I met Derek Yost working out of a huge open warehouse studio in an unnamed industrial area in North Portland. The space, Bohemia, is currently under construction, so I pelt Yost with questions over the din of drilling and hammering. A native north westerner and graduate of Evergreen State College, Yost has been chosen to paint a mural for the Coop’ s west wall above the produce department.

A welcoming yet somewhat shy individual, Yost does not gloat about making his living as an artist but meekly tells me he works at Trader Joes for his day job. As I dig a bit deeper I find that he in fact creates the painted murals and signs for some of the local stores- still “ making” it as an artist in my book.

When asked about his interest in public art, Yost tells me that it allows for democratization and collaboration. His passion for public over private art is apparent as he rattles off the reasons he likes to work in and with community. He’ s interested in reaching a broader audience with his work whether by printing on t-shirts, working with classrooms of children, or producing murals for our beloved Coop.

The parameters for creating the piece were wide. Yost was told only that his design should reflect connecting people to food. His art reflects richness of texture and color. He uses dreamlike symbolism, iconography, folklore, and images that support his interest in the natural world, time, and travel. Yost tells me of his native Blackfoot background and his interest in Native spirituality. He speaks of the generations of quilters in his family and how watching the quilt patterns emerge defined his interest in texture and pattern. Yost spent some formative years in California and Nevada and makes a point to tell me the importance of developing a sense of place wherever he lands.

Upon viewing his work I see the western United States. Untamed, vivid, and avidly explored by rail, air, and most apparent by a seeming sense of spiritual vision or opiate induced vision quest. Yost has a defined interest in birds and reptiles that has been with him as long as he can remember. There is a dreamy quality to his words when he speaks of birds being “ the greatest travelers ever.” He speaks of his enormous feather collection and his interest in the shape and form of birds. His fascination with migration and flight is palpable. Yost himself admits he is a wanderer, enjoying long walks and taking photographs as a means of research for his paintings.

For the Coop mural Yost began looking at vintage fruit labels from the 40’ s and 50’ s. He chose vibrant but weathered colors that would connect to the Coops current color scheme. The finished painting will be five separate panels spanning 24’ x5’ and will grace the wall above the produce department. Derek Yost will be installing his work mid June. Here are a few progress shots of the Coop Mural. For the most part I've Been working on it as much as i can whenever i can.. I've got student named Jade from Portland's B Academy interning with me that has been helping me develop some of the pattern work so i am most grateful to have an extra set of hands helping out with getn er' done. Its awesome that Jade gets to earn High School credit in a subject she is passionate about through the means of a real hands on learning experience.

A Painting for Ben.

Years ago me and a freind of mine took this colossal bike trip across the state of Nevada. On a fine summer evening about a week into the journey we crossed the border into Utah searching for a place to sleep weary from miles of travel. Off the highway a few hundred yards stood an old dilapidated shack that looked suitable enough to house our tired bodies for the night. As we walked down to get a closer look we began to notice all these barn swallows swarming out of the broken windows... I found the visual to be really interesting and kinda erie at the same time. Not feeling up to sleeping on a blanket of bird shit we hiked back up towards the higwway, threw down our bags and said good night to the big Utah sky.

Hustling sometimes.. bridges over bearing weight, old handwriting, streetlights, seagulls and purple eyeliner.. elementary shit. Running these ideas under water while kicking rocks down dirty tracks thinking about the phrase " if these yards could speak". The sky an atmospheric blanket in which dusty longings surround us and bear witness to the becoming dawn. There are many ceilings on earth and stories told create the genesis of dream time.. a shifting of sorts. Most lie dormant like giant trees during december fast alseep like solo artists with split identities.

Be alone.. take me down underneath all things visible to the naked eye. Portals and rhinestone logic strewn with the aftermath of a flash flood. Natural disaster university parking curb reputation. Puching bags made of panty hose and razors, syringes stuffed into tree houses built upon old burly oaks of the live variety. Tools of the trade: bolt cutters, butcher knifes, molotov cocktails, organic soil,rain sunshine, a little love and a lotta berry cobbler. Crisp fall mornings walking ghost towns in Montana looking for the right rusty spot.. moving like the seasons across the landscape. Mapping out my escape route in all four directions. I'll be good and gone come night fall south bound towards the sage brush and big skys of translucent blue.. im there.

Northwest mystics.. scarlet runner winter time wishful thinker. Advancing down dark tracks. Carrion, rocks, and rotten grain, a foul smell. Metal giants monolithic mobility. Rusty cosmetic composition. Work ethic. The wind is at my back. Numb fingers fumbling for media. There is a song that is sung.. deep guttural and industrial groans, bangs, and ticks, and of course the hiss. Immense silence. I always hope for adequate moonlight and a slight breeze. At this point, creosote is like incense. I belong to the night.

Outer dark like an inner desire to call forth youthful spirits of the mind. Time travel. Intimate recollections of the pieces of a man's life wander into an unknown area of reflective fibers composed of interwoven hands. Thin, bony, and claw like fingers grasping at the closet object. Granite blocks sustained my child hood excursions. Nature's carpet. Oak trees, live ones and white ones, even blue creek bottoms where the sound of our laughter echoed up and down the cliffs where swallows nested. Graffited culverts. Red tailed hawks and sultry summer days of dreams and prefered pastimes. Barefoot excursions bounding through a place only known to the peripheral. Stung by the nettle of sweetness and bit by a lizard with a purple mouth.Death for the sake of thrill and environmental education. The crow a pheasant calls me back everytime.

Mixed media collaboration done with my buddy kevin @ the Contemporary Gallery in Reno Nevada, circa 2007.

The theme of the show was titled "Con" words. My word of choice was Conceal and Kevin went with Contaminated. Kevin did the lettering, which spells out "contaminated", and i painted the characters. That years show was one of the most beautifully orchistrated collaborations i have ever wtinessed. Implied Violence of Seattle stunned the crowds with a outlandish performance while a handful of local and out of town painters, sculptors, and installation artists assaulted the derelict walls of this space with a diverse array of artistic style. A most memorable event for sure!

Can't help but miss that sweet washoe zephyr breeze sometimes... this piece stemmed from another of similar character that i donated to a benefit show for a friend of a friend who was is pretty bad shape after a near fatal automobile collision. the good news is that the piece ended up selling.
